Electrochemical and morphological investigation of the effect of rare earth (RE) salts (terbium, Tb and gadolinium, Gd) on the corrosion rate of aluminum alloys. Study of the effect of the addition of the RE on the corrosion mechanism of aluminium in presence of chlorides. Applications: protection of aluminium components against corrosion, development of environmentally friendly pretreatment for aluminium.

Investigation by means of electrochemical methods of the electrochemical activity of the particles over passive materials. Applications: passivation of Al alloys and steel, exhaust gas treatment, catalysis.

Electrodeposition of polyaniline and polypyrrole based conductive polymers

Chemical/Electrochemical synthesis and characterization of conductive polymers based coatings. Polyaniline and polypyrrole polymers are deposited over metallic substrates to provide passivation and improved functionalities. The conductive/semiconductive nature of the coating is characterized by electrochemical techniques. the metal/polymer interface by means of surface analyses (XPS) and SEM/TEM.

IR reflective cool roof coatings for energy-saving buildings

1) Energy efficiency characterization of organic coating containing IR reflective pigments for cool-roof applications. Investigation of the effect of atmospheric degradation on the durability and energy efficiency of the coatings;

2) Wet chemistry synthesis of IR reflective pigments based on Fe oxides and rare earth compounds: investigation of the effect of the synthesis conditions on the IR reflectivity and energy saving efficiency.

Sol-gel derived thin films for corrosion protection of light alloys

2) Synthesis and characterization of sol-gel films derived from Si-based hybrid molecules thin modified for the corrosion protection of aluminum alloys. Investigation of the sol-gel layer as a coupling agent between the metal substrate and an organic coating (paint);

Synthesis and development of Layered Double Hydroxide based coatings on aluminum alloys through hydrothermal method. AlMg, ZnAl, LiAl, ZnMgAl, CaAl, and CaAlMg LDH can be obtained on the surface of aluminum by means of al electrochemical or chemical methods assisted by temperature and pressure. The potential applications are: water treatment, corrosion protection, superhydrophobic/hydrophilic switch, ions exchange, drugs release.
