Davide Brunelli


Associate Professor at University of Trento.

Degree in Electrical Engineering (2002), PhD in Electrical Engineering (2007) from the University of Bologna. From 2005 to 2007 he has been visiting researcher at ETHZ studying to develop methodologies for Energy Harvesting aware embedded design. He currently cooperates with ETHZ on energy efficient distributed sensor platforms. He was scientific supervisor of several EU FP7 projects: EEB-ENV-3ENCULT, ICT-GENESI and FP7 Network of Excellence - ARTISTDESIGN - Design for embedded systems.

He was leading industrial cooperation activities with Telecom Italia, STMicroelectronics and Hewlett-Packard. Member of several Technical Program Committees of conferences in the field of sensor networks and energy management, including the The Design, Automation, and Test in Europe (DATE) conference and the IEEE International Conference on Emerging Technologies and Factory Automation, the International Workshop on Energy in Wireless Sensor Networks. He is author of more than 230 paper in international journals and conferences, that have been cited more than 6317 times, with an H-index of 48 (source Google Scholar).

Development of new techniques of Energy Scavenging for electronic embedded systems
  The study is focused both on hardware and software issues. In particular hardware research involves maximum power point tracking methods, conversion techniques using multiple sources (i.e. photovoltaic, vibration, RF…) and power-consumption optimization. Research on software solutions for energy harvesting is oriented to power management policies, energy control and prediction algorithms

Development and optimization of low-power and low-cost Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) for Climate and Environmental Monitoring.
  In particular my interests are oriented to development of networks of low-cost and pervasive sensors for enviromental monitoring, surveillance and intrusion detection;

Development of algorithms for Wireless Sensor Network communication and new standards exploration
  Research on low-rate wireless personal area networks (LPWAN) aims to explore the limits and the constraints of audio/video streaming applications over WSNs

Exploring interaction and design issues in embedded personal device and wireless sensor network
  Particular emphasis is dedicated on ultra-low power design and energy management and research is focused on battery-less systems which use alternative storage devices (e.g. supercapacitor)

Development of algorithms for position analysis and tracking in indoor environments
  Positioning platforms use self powered WSNs deployed in the environment. Exploration of different methods and positioning engines (e.g. UWB, GPS, Bluetooth based, RSSI based)

Ubiquitous computing oriented to the cooperation through mobile devices and development of applications for portable systems

GreenDataNet - Green and Smart Data Centres Network Design

The GreenDataNet project aims at designing and validating a new, system-level optimisation solution allowing urban data centres to radically improve their energy and environmental performance. The objective is to develop a set of beyond state-of-the-art technologies that will allow urban data centres to reach 80% of renewable power and decrease their average Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) from 1.6-2.0 today to less than 1.3. GreenDataNet will enable energy monitoring and optimisation of IT, power, cooling and storage at three levels: servers and racks, individual data centres, and networks of data centres.

EnerViS project aims at studying and developing a prototype of a battery-operated, ultra-low power vision system targeted to people monitoring applications. It is powered with the energy which is harvested from the surrounding environment and communicates wirelessly with a base-station. It will be the first building block for an energy-autonomous vision system.

Further, we enhance the CPS testbeds with support for reprogramming, localisation, high-fidelity sensing and control, and Energy Harvesting.

The ENIAC JU project END targets the development of innovative energy-aware design solutions and electronic design automation technologies for the next generation of nanoelectronics circuits and systems, and related energy generation, conversion and management systems.

SUPREME - Self-powered Smart Energy Systems

Energy saving in residential and commercial buildings is one of the key themes in sustainability strategies for the near future. The building sector is responsible for the 40% of the overall energy consumptions and it is divided in conditioning (heating, cooling and ventilation) and electrical (appliances) consumptions. Despite numerous energy efficiency policies, the electrical consumption continues to grow. The aim of the project is SUPREME, a novel Self-Powered Wireless Sensor Metering Network (WSMN) system for monitoring energy usage and controlling AC appliances in different kind of buildings, so that end-user can understand their power consumption and reduce them.

3ENCULT - Efficient ENergy for EU Cultural Heritage

The project 3ENCULT bridges the gap between conservation of historic buildings and climate protection, which is not an antagonism at all: historic buildings will only survive if maintained as living space. Energy efficient retrofit is useful for structural protection as well as for comfort reasons - comfort for users and 'comfort' for heritage collections. The joint task of conservation and energy efficient retrofit is highly interdisciplinary. The 3ENCULT consortium will demonstrate the feasibility of 'Factor 4' to 'Factor 10' reduction in energy demand, depending on the case and the heritage value, with the help of ICT technology.

These teams have already established a long-term vision for embedded systems in Europe, which advances the emergence of Embedded Systems as a mature discipline.

As miniaturization of the CMOS technology advances designers will have to deal with increased variability and changing performance of devices. Intrinsic variability of devices which begins to be visible in 65nm devices already will become much more significant in smaller technologies. Soon it will not be possible to design systems using current methods and techniques. Dealing with these new challenges will require an adaptation of the current design process: a combination of design time and runtime techniques and methods will be needed to guarantee the correct functioning of Systems on Chip (SoC) over the product's lifetime, despite the fabrication in unreliable nano-scale technologies. The objective of this project is to develop design techniques and methods for real-time guaranteed, energy-efficient, robust and self-adaptive SoCs.

  1. 2009, Co-founder of WISPES srl, Wireless Intelligent Self-Powered Electronic Systems (Bologna, Italy).
    Startup company founded thanks to the transfer of the research achievements in the field of energy harvesting technologies, distributed and pervasive monitoring systems and data fusion with wireless sensor networks.
