Since 2002, he has been an Assistant Professor and then an Associate Professor of telecommunications at the University of Trento, Italy, where he teaches (taught) pattern recognition, advanced pattern recognition, machine learning, radar remote-sensing systems, remote sensing for archaeology, digital transmission, and digital signal processing. From 2007 to 2010, he was the head of the Intelligent Information Processing Laboratory of the Department of Information Engineering and Computer Science of the University of Trento. Since 2011, he is the head of the Signal Processing and Recognition Laboratory in the same department. He is a member of the Executive Committee of the International Graduate School in Information and Communication Technologies of the University of Trento, and the responsible of the double degree and internationalization programs for the M.S. degree in Telecommunications Engineering at the same university.

Interessi di ricerca

His research interests are in the fields of processing, pattern recognition, machine learning and computer vision techniques applied to remote sensing, biomedical signals/images and assistive technologies. His most significant contributions are in the areas of: 1) multisource data fusion; 2) contextual and semi-supervised classification; 3) unsupervised and supervised change detection; 4) classification of hyperspectral imagery; 5) estimation of biophysical parameters; and 6) reconstruction of missing data. Part of his researches was carried out within research projects funded by the European Space Agency (ESA), the Italian Space Agency (ASI), the Italian Ministry of the Education, Research and University (MIUR), and the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE).

Attività di ricerca

He is coauthor of about 140 scientific publications, including more than 60 journal publications. He has more than 2500 citations on Google Scholar, an H-Index=23 and about 180 cites/year. He is a referee for more than 30 international journals. He was a project evaluator for the Belgian Science Policy Office (2006, 2009), for the Los Alamos National Laboratory, USA, (2007), for the Swiss National Science Foundation (2011), and for The Icelandic Research Fund (2012). He has served on the Scientific Committee and/or as Session Chair for the IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium (IGARSS), the SPIE Conference on Image and Signal Processing for Remote Sensing, the IEEE International Workshop on the Analysis of Multitemporal Remote-Sensing Images, the IEEE International Conference on Image Processing (ICIP), and the IASTED International Conference on Signal Processing, Pattern Recognition and Applications. He has supervised the thesis activity of 10 PhD, 23 Master and 55 Bachelor students.
