Yannis Velegrakis is a faculty member of the Department of Information Engineering and Computer Science of the University of Trento. He holds a PhD degree in Computer Science from the University of Toronto. He is one of the founders of dbTrento, the Data and Information Management group. His research areas of expertise include large scale integration of heterogeneous and highly distributed data, efficient and effective query answering methods, social data analysis, and Big Data. Prior to joining  the University of Trento, he held a researcher position at AT&T Research Labs in the United States. He has also spent time as a visitor at the University of California, Santa-Cruz, the IBM Almaden Research Center, and the Center of Advanced Studies of the IBM Toronto Lab. He was a member of the committee for the CIMI cultural profile of the ANSI/NISO Z39.50 standard. He has served in many program committees of national and international conferences and as reviewer for numerous international journals. He has been a general chair for VLDB 2013 and has also been general chair for WebDB 2012, DESWEB 2010/11, SWAE2007 and SDSW 2014. He holds 2 US patents and has been a  Marie Curie Fellow for the period 2006-2008.

Yannis Velegrakis è afferente del Dipartimento di Ingegneria e Scienza dell’informazione dell’Università degli Studi di Trento. Ha conseguito un dottorato in Informatica presso l’Università di Toronto. E’ uno dei fondatori del dbTrento, il gruppo di Gestione delle Informazioni e dei Dati. Le sue aree di ricerca e specializzazione includono integrazione su larga scala di dati eterogenei e altamente distribuiti, metodi efficienti ed efficaci per la risoluzione di queries, analisi di dati sociali e Big Data. Prima di entrare a far parte dell’Università degli Studi di Trento, ha lavorato come ricercatore presso gli AT&T Research Labs negli Stati uniti. Ha trascorso dei periodi in qualità di visitor presso l’Università di California, Santa-Cruz, l’ IBM Almaden Research Center e il Center of Advanced Studies dell’ IBM Toronto Lab. E’ stato membro di commissione per il profilo culturale CIMI dello standard ANSI/NISO Z39.50. Ha fatto parte della program committee di molte conferenze nazionali e internazionali ed è stato un reviewer per numerose riviste internazionali. Ha inoltre ricoperto il ruolo di general chair per VLDB2013, WebDB 2012, DESWEB 2010/11, SWAE2007 e SDSW 2014. E’ proprietario di due brevetti ed è stato un Marie Curie Fellow per il periodo 2006-2008.
