Research interests

The research activity focuses on electrochemistry, corrosion science, and surface functionalization. Fundamental as well as applied aspects of metals/environment interaction are the main research interests. In particular:

  • Organic coating for corrosion protection: lab-scale tests vs outdoor exposure
  • Service life prediction of organic coatings (paints and varnishes)
  • Assessment of corrosion protection properties of organic coatings by electrochemical techniques
  • Environmentally friendly conversion coatings for the corrosion protection of Al and Al alloys surfaces
  • Development of ED lanthanide oxide based electrodes for batteries and catalysis
  • Organic and inorganic functionalization of metallic surfaces
  • Layered Double Hydroxides (LDH) films for surface functionalization of metallic surfaces
  • Synthesis and characterization of NIR reflective pigments for cool-roof surfaces
  • Materials for restoration of Cultural Heritage

  • SteelCoat Project (NMP-1910.1.2-2 Substitution of materials or components utilizing green nanotechnology. Project Number: 263262) funded by FP7 program of European Commission (2011-2013) – Member of working unit – Brief description: development of environmentally friendly anticorrosion composite coatings for steel protection based on cerium oxide nanoparticles and conductive polymers.
  • Novel coatings for the efficiency and durability of solar energy conversion systems – funded by Cariplo Fundation (2010-2011) – Member of the project leader working unit – Brief description: design and development of thin coatings for corrosion protection of silver and aluminium solar mirrors by Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) and sol-gel routes.
  • New nanocomposite waterborne photo-cured coatings – PRIN – funded by MIUR (2005) - Member of working unit - Brief description: design and development of photo-curable water-borne composite coatings containing hybrid i/o nanoparticles and their physio-chemical and electrochemical characterization.
