Carriera accademica ed attività didattica

Dr. Elena Fasoli joined the Law Faculty of the University of Trento as Assistant Professor of international law in November 2016.

In 2009 she obtained her Ph.D. in international law at the University of Milan discussing a thesis on the "Reparation for non-Material Damages in Inter-State Relations" under the supervision of Prof. Tullio Treves. In 2012 the dissertation resulted in the publication of the book: “La riparazione dei danni immateriali nei rapporti tra Stati” (Reparation for non-Material Damages in inter-State Relations) by Editoriale Scientifica. She was later appointed Senior Post-doc Researcher at the University of Bologna where she taught public international law from 2010 to 2013. In 2012 she was Visiting Research Fellow at the British Institute of International and Comparative Law. 

From 2013 to 2016 Dr. Fasoli has been Research Fellow at Queen Mary University of London: until October 2014 she participated in the project EFFACE  (European Union Action to Fight Environmental Crime) which was a research project funded by the EU under FP7; and from April 2015 to June 2016 she participated in a research project on historical pollution funded by EDISON s.p.a.

From 2013 to 2016 she has been also Teaching Fellow at Queen Mary University of London as Course Convenor of European Environmental Law (EEL) and Climate Change Law and Policy. In 2016 she has been Teaching Fellow in EEL at the University of Edinburgh and at the Ocean University of China (Qingdao) on a scholarship for Visiting Professors from the Chinese Government.

Dr. Fasoli has been external consultant to the Ministry of the Environment of Italy from 2009 to 2013 and to the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe from 2015 to 2016. On several occasions she has been a member of the Italian delegation to intergovernmental and expert meetings under the Aarhus Convention and the UNECE Water Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes. From 2014 to 2017 she was a member of the UNECE Aarhus Convention Compliance Committee.

2018-2019, participation in a research project (as Member of the research team), funded by the Veneto Region in the context of the European Social Fund, dealing with “The Promotion of renewable energy in the companies operating in the Veneto region: instruments and normative techniques at the European as well as local levels”.

From January 2018: participation as Member of the applicant committee in the research project “Progetto Strategico di Ateneo on International Migratory Laboratory”, Trento University.

From November 2017, participation as Scientific Advisor in the research activities undertaken by the Network on Sustainability and Participation (SustaiNET) funded by DFG (German Research Foundation).

2017-2018, participation in a research project (as Member of the research team), funded by the Veneto Region in the context of the European Social Fund, dealing with “the Regulation of electric transportation: challenges and opportunities for the Region of Veneto”.

Research Fellow at Queen Mary University of London (April 2015-June 2016): participation in a research project on historical pollution. The aim of the research was to develop a comparative study on the different solutions adopted at the national, European and international levels to cope with phenomena of historical pollution (e.g. contamination of industrial sites, legacy pollution, cumulative pollution).

Leading Researcher (March 2015-December 2016): external Consultant to UNECE for the preparation of a comparative study (Italy, France, Portugal and The Netherlands) on the possibilities for environmental non-governmental organisations to claim damages on behalf of the environment.

Research Fellow at Queen Mary University of London (May 2013-October 2014): participation in the research project “European Union Action to Fight Environmental Crime” (EFFACE - efface.eu).

Visiting Research Fellow (July 2012) at British Institute of International and Comparative Law (London), researching the interplay between EU law and international law obligations in the environmental field with a focus on the possibility for the EU Member States to trigger the Compliance Mechanisms established under Multilateral Environmental Agreements.

Intern (January-July 2008) at British Institute of International and Comparative Law (London), researching the topic of State Responsibility. 

Participation to the activities of research unit (2006-2008), PRIN funded by Italian Ministry for University and Research on “Compliance Systems: Alternative Means for the Prevention Management and Settlement of International Disputes in International Environmental Law”.
