PhD in Environmental Engineering

[2008-2012]

  • Institution: University of Trento, Department of Civil, Environmental and Mechanical Engineering
  • Thesis: Urban scale phenomena and boundary layer processes in mountain valleys
  • Description: The PhD research activity focused on the evaluation of the urban climate of the city of Trento, adopted as a representative case study of urban weather and climate phenomena in a mid-sized city lying in a mountain valley. First the intensity of the urban heat island was assessed analysing data from surface weather stations. The investigation of the urban climate of Trento focused then on a smaller spatial scale, analyzing in detail the thermal field inside an urban canyon, by means of two experimental campaigns and the use of a simple model. Finally, high-resolution (500 m) numerical simulations with the mesoscale meteorological WRF model were performed to study the urban climate of Trento in the Adige Valley context.

Projects

INTERFACE - Investigating the surface energy balance over mountain areas

Duration: 2022-2025

Funding: 205'345,35 € (University of Trento); 497'180,64 € (total),

Funding body: European Region Tyrol-South Tyrol-Trentino

Role: Principal Investigator

The project aims at evaluating the uncertainties connected to the measurement of the surface energy balance at different sites in the Alpine environment, where processes related to the lack of closure are expected to be particularly significant. Measurements at sites located in different contexts and climatic settings, thus differently influenced by advection, will allow to investigate the relationship between the non-closure of the surface energy balance, the surface heterogeneity and the consequent development of different types of local and mesoscale circulations. The above objectives will be addressed by combining eddy covariance and UAV measurements, integrated by high-resolution numerical simulations.

ASTER - Atmospheric boundary-layer modeling over complex terrain

Duration: 2019-2021

Funding: €145'442 (University of Trento); € 432'507 (total)

Funding Body: European Region Tyrol-South Tyrol-Trentino

Role: Principal Investigator of the research unit of the University of Trento

The project is a collaboration between the University of Innsbruck (project leader Manuela Lehner), the University of Trento (project leader Lorenzo Giovannini), and the Free University of Bolzano (project leader Massimo Tagliavini), with the objectives (i) to evaluate meteorological models performance in forecasting soil properties and surface and near-surface turbulent fluxes and to identify potential error sources and (ii) to evaluate the models sensitivity to changes or potential errors in the turbulence and land surface parameterizations or their input parameters. The overall result will be an identification of modeling issues in mountainous terrain related to the turbulence and land surface parameterizations that have a large impact on the forecast. Improvements in these specific areas can thus be expected to have a comparatively large positive impact on numerical model simulations and consequently weather forecasts.

OT4CLIMA - Development of innovative observational technologies to study the impacts of climate change on the environment

Duration: 2018-2020

Funding: €67'875 (University of Trento); €4'494'621,38 (total); 9'049'470,47 (total project budget)

Funding Body: Italian Ministry of Education, Universities and Research

Role: Collaborator

The project aims at developing innovative techniques and methodologies for environmental measurements, to advance knowledge and understanding the impacts of climate change. Both long-term impacts and extreme events will be taken into account, with a particular attention on the impacts on vegetation and ecosystems.

LIFE project BrennerLEC - Brenner Lower Emissions Corridor

Duration: 2017-2021

Funding: €282'000 (University of Trento); €1'922'772 (total project); €4'018'005 (total project budget)

Funding Body: European Union - LIFE Environment Program

Role: Member of the "Core Team" of the project, scientific coordinator of the research unit of the University of Trento.

The objective of BrennerLEC is the creation of a holistic concept of "Low Emission Corridor" (LEC) for the A22 highway. The project aims at implementing and validating a set of different dynamic policies that have the goal to provide a clear environmental benefit in terms of air quality, climate protection and noise abatement. The research unit of the Univeristy of Trento is developing a meteorological and air quality forecast system, and leading the analysis of data from different meteorological and air quality stations specifically installed for the project.

Evaluation of pollutants emission and dispersion from the incinerator of the city of Bolzano

Duration: 2015-2018

Funding: €194'000 (University of Trento), €520'000 (total project budget)

Funding Body: EcoCenter S.p.A.

Role: Collaborator

The project aimed at evaluating pollutants emission and dispersion from the incinerator of Bolzano. Meteorological conditions critical for pollutants' dispersion in the Bolzano basin were evaluated by means of simulations with the WRF model. In order to improve model performance, data assimilation technique was applied, feeding the model with both conventional (surface weather stations) and non-conventional (sodar, lidar and thermal profiler) measured data.

High-resolution forecasts of the thermal comfort in the main urban areas of the Province of Trento

Duration: 2015-2017

Funding: €45'000 (total project budget €71'000)

Funding Body: Caritro Foundation

Role: Principal Investigator

Development of an operational forecasting system for evaluating the citizens' thermal comfort in the major urban areas of the Province of Trento. The modeling chain is composed of the WRF meteorological model, run down to a resolution of 1 km, coupled with an offline urban parameterization scheme, to achieve a final resolution of 100 m. Weather maps are available twice a day on a web site for both "traditional" parameters and specific forecasts for the urban areas (meteo.unitn.it).

Evaluation of air pollutants emissions in the Municipality of Campo di Trens (BZ)

Duration: 2014-2015

Funding: €20'000

Funding Body: Autobrennero highway

Role: Collaborator

Simulations with the AERMOD dispersion model were performed to assess the impact on air quality of different pollutants emission sources in the area surrounding Campo di Trens: vehicular traffic, the domestic sector and local production activities.

Development of a wind atlas for the Province of Trento

Duration: 2013-2015

Funding: €95'000

Funding Body: Autonomous Province of Trento

Role: Coordinator of the scientific activities

Funding: €40'000

Funding Body: Autonomous Province of Trento

Role: Collaborator

Evaluation of the relation between synoptic circulation types and the climate of the Province of Trento, considering a data set of surface temperature, rainfall, solar radiation and wind measurements.
