Marco Ciolli focused his researches on forest landscape changes using field work and advanced GIS techniques to map forest changes through the years and their interactions with biodiversity and Traditional Ecological knowledge changes including the role of the bear in Trentino;
He investigated forest influence on natural hazards using dendrocronological techniques to map avalanches and debris flow and reconstruct  their spatial and temporal patterns;
He sampled and studied forest types in great detail in two different areas of Trentino, thus contributing to the creation of the first Trentino forest types catalogue;  
He studied the application of sensors to detect environmental pollution and experimented the use of self build Arduino based sensors to measure domestic pollution in Tanzania and Vietnam in the frame of a cooperation project;  
In the frame of two research projects (Biomasfor and recharge.green) he investigated forest biomass sustainable use creating different GIS software (Biomasfor, r.green.biomassfor) to model, plan and organize forest biomass use;
He studied invasive species spread using spatial ecology modelling and citizen science and tropical environments using GIS and field work focusing on the relation between forest cover and primate abundance;  
He studied a set of GIS tools able to perform screening analysis to assess the risks of different possible environmental pollution sources in protected areas available to non-specialist operators (ENVIFATE);
More in general he studied GIS applied to ecological and sustainable planning and investigated various topics as testified by his national and international publications.
