The Italian law (DM n. 45/2013) requires that the PhD thesis is evaluated by two or more Referees, chosen among professors and researchers of Italian and foreign institutions, with a high qualification, outside of the University and of other possible bodies participating in the Doctoral Programme.

Referees are required to evaluate in an analytic way the dissertation and to propose the public defense of the dissertation or the postponement for a period no longer than six months, should significant integrations or corrections be necessary.

After that period, the thesis will be admitted to the public defense, together with a new reference.
