The Italian law (DM n. 226/2021) requires that PhD thesis is evaluated by two or more Referees (at least one of the referees must be a university professor or researcher) of Italian and foreign institutions, with a high qualification, outside of the University and other possible bodies participating in the Doctoral Programme.

Referees are required to evaluate analitically the PhD thesis and to propose the public defense or the postponement for a period no longer than six months, should significant integrations or corrections be necessary.

After that period, the PhD thesis will be admitted to the public defense, together with a new reference.
