Research interests

Main research activities deal with the development and application to different topics of techniques and tools as multi-objective optimisation and environmental impact assessment. These techniques are used to integrate environmental sustainability aspects with technical-economic criteria for the design and management of distribution networks, warehousing systems, manufacturing and assembly lines as well as energy production plants. Finally, the research activity is completed with experimental and prototyping activities developed in laboratory concerning hardware/software architectures to digitize manual production processes through depth cameras. For further information see section Attachments.

Research work
  • Experimental activities developed in laboratory concerning the digitization of manual production processes using markerless motion capture technologies. A hardware-software architecture based on depth cameras is developed to monitor the movements that an operator performs in relation to the surrounding environment, in order to automatically and quantitatively evaluate the main ergonomic and productive human performances (see section Attachments).

  • Principles and technologies of Industry 4.0: human-machine interaction through augmented reality tools, Internet of Things for the digitization of the assembly process, Digital twin for the simulation of material flows in industrial plants and facility layout (see section Attachments).

  • Assembly lines and manufacturing systems design and management. Multi-objective optimization model for the integrated assessment of product packaging, component management and operator ergonomics (see section Attachments).

  • Design and management of logistic and distribution networks, considering their main distinctive features as the node number and type, the planning time horizon and the transported product features (perishability). Integrated minimization of the operating cost, travel time and CO2 emissions (see section Attachments).

  • Warehousing and storage system dimensioning considering multiple performance criteria during the warehouse entire life cycle. Definition of operational strategies for product assignment to storage locations through unconventional approaches (see section Attachments).

  • Design and operational management of hybrid systems for the production and distribution of energy. Mathematical models for the design of hybrid energy systems powered by different sources (renewable and non-renewable) optimizing technical, economic and environmental performances during the entire life cycle. Intelligent algorithms for the real time operational management of energy flows between the different modules of the system, with particular considerations related to the storage of the energy produced (see section Attachments).
